Design is in the details.

#shelfstyle

As designers we often get asked about bookshelf styling. #shelfstyle is all about the mix! It’s about mixing those items that have meaning to you with other finds that bring a sense of style to your home.

You can use family photos to make sure you have coordinating picture frames. Coordinating doesn’t necessarily mean “matchy matchy” think about selecting a few tones, textures, and materials that make sense for the shelves you are styling and don’t be afraid to have fun! We also love having photos printed in black and white because it just keeps things clean and a bit more uniform.

Art books are another way to curate your #shelfstyle. Again, it is best to begin by thinking about colors and textures that you would like to highlight. Subject matter is the BEST way to make your statement when it comes to selecting which titles to add to your home. If you are using a large book you might consider using just one book that really makes a statement in both color, texture, and subject. If your space lends itself to layers think about selecting titles that speak to the collective in color and scale.

Mix, match, rework, and rethink!

Objects are arguably the best way to bring heightened style to your shelves. We love shopping vintage! While color and texture are important, we suggest paying close attention to scale. This is all about trial and error. Place the object and then step back and look at the whole composition. You’ll want to create “moments”, but make sure you are considering how the entire shelf of the bookcase looks when you take a step back. If you’ve been mindful of color throughout your selection process, you’ll be in a great spot when you get to this point.

Don’t be afraid to start over and rework – it’s a process. We often revisit #shelfstyle many times before we get them to a place we love. Also, styling any area of your home is an evolution. The styling within your home should evolve just like your wardrobe does. Mix, match, rework, and rethink!
